Tutor Description

I am a 2007 graduate of Amherst College, where I majored in English and Music, concentrating in creative writing. I graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, with a 3.95 cumulative GPA. I received two writing awards--one for essay writing, and one for a play I submitted for a creative project award. In high school, I received a National Merit Scholarship based on my scores on the PSAT and SAT, and I received SAT scores in the top percentile in Math, Critical Reading, and Writing.

I live in Manhattan. If you're seeking a tutor for an elementary school student, middle school student, or high school student, I can teach almost any subject--including writing, grammar, math, science, and social studies. I can also prepare students for the PSAT, SAT, and Math I or IIc.

If you're a College Student seeking a tutor, I can teach English or Music--in particular I can be a valuable resource in helping you become a better writer, in any subject, and I can help edit and give constructive feedback on particular papers.

I can travel to the outer bouroughs, depending upon my schedule and the number of tutoring sessions we schedule a week.

Professionally, I have worked as a tutor, camp counselor, administrator, and game designer (designing games to facilitate learning at summer camps, as well as creating large story-based games for YMCA Camp Coniston, in Grantham, NH). I have mentored thousands of campers--aged 8 to 15, and specifically trained numerous staff, working extensively with the youngest staff members, in their junior and senior years at high school. As a tutor, I have taught math, english, writing, science, and history to students primarily in middle school. I have also directed or musically directed dozens of children's shows--I've written music for two original productions.

Just being able to do something well doesn't mean you can teach it, and I am particularly good at explaining complicated ideas to students--and more importantly, learning from my students how best a subject can be explained to them. I learn best when I read something and I discuss it outloud--but some students learn best when they visualize something, some when they feel they aren't learning at all, and some when it's learned in the context of a game. I make it a point to discover exactly what a student is having trouble with (sometimes it's something unexpected--a problem understanding the concept of division, for instance, or a crisis of confidence when they begin to write a paper), and I work not not only to fix the problem, but to create a broader, intuitive understanding of the subject--until a student no longer needs my assurance to know if they got the "right answer." The right answer can happen by accident, but a reliable process takes patience and perserverance--and ultimately rewards the tutor and the student precisely at the moment that the student no longer needs tutoring. I am extremely creative (I ran a kitchen at Amherst, performed in musical and non-musical productions, edited a section of the newspaper, and wrote plays and short stories) and I like to encourage creativity in my students--but, having worked at camp and been on sports teams, I am comfortable mentoring, connecting with, or simply teaching students from any background and with any interests.

I can be contacted at my e-mail: jmaxrosen@gmail.com, or by phone, at 603-359-2767.
